The ship is way out at sea in our home, where the kids are even older than yours, but I will say that I once "took back" the iPod we gave our oldest for Christmas (his one and only gift!) when I realized it wasn't appropriate. I simply said, "I'm new to parenting preteens and this was a mistake. What would you like to replace this gift with?" and we started over. I also really like Bark, software designed to help you keep your kids safe on the internet and teach them responsibility. (https://www.bark.us/?nav_items=alt)
Love this and will be sending along to a few friends who feel their “ship has already sailed.” Many have been avoiding reading Haidt’s book for similar reasons.
Ours are 12, 10, and 8 and have no phones (or social media) between them, but many of their friends do. We are reminding them of ways to engage (they do have messaging through iPads they can use here and there, but they honestly forget about it… it’s not their default) still with those friends and hopefully inspire them to keep playing, discovering, and connecting in the real world! At this point, living by example is about the best we can do. ♥️

Thank you— I will check out Bark and I also love the way you called back that gift! I need to learn from that example…
